CSA

The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Sustainable Forest Management Standard is a national standard for Canada.

The Canadian Standards Association is a not-for-profit membership-based association serving business, industry, government and consumers in Canada and the global marketplace.  Canada's National Standard on Sustainable Forest Management (CAN/CSA Z809) utilizes a continual improvement approach, requires public participation, practical demonstration of sustainable forest management practices, management commitment and takes into account environmental, social and economic factors.  A revised version of the Z809 standard will be published by the end of 2008

A new standard for woodlots, CAN/CSA Z804-08 Sustainable Forest Management for Woodlots and Other Small Area Forests, was published in March 2008.

CSA Chain of Custody (CoC) certification requires conformance with the internationally recognized PEFC Council CoC Requirements as set out in PEFC Annex 4.

If you are purchasing (or would like to purchase) from a supplier who claims to hold a Chain of Custody certificate, you can contact the CSA to determine whether the supplier holds a valid chain of custody certificate (it has not been suspended or is not expired), and whether the product you wish to purchase is covered by the scope of the certificate.

Chain of custody and product labelling

CSA has three marking options. Two are based on inventory control and accounting of certified wood flows and the third is based on physical separation of certified wood. All CSA products/product lines have a minimum of 70% input certified raw material.

Product

 Solid wood

When a known percentage of certified-woodbased raw material (ie, input batch) enters into processing at a given facility, the same percentage (on an average) of the production (ie, output batch) is considered to be certified.

This Mark appears on the product and/or the packaging, and is only applicable to solid wood.

Content

Composite products

The minimum average input into a batch of products is 70% (by volume or weight) of certified wood-based raw material.

This Mark appears on the product and/or the packaging.

100 % certified100% Certified

Certified wood, wood raw materials and wood products are received and clearly marked or physically segregated or otherwise identified as certified and remain clearly identifiable as certified throughout transportation, handling, processing, manufacturing or remanufacturing process(s).

This Mark appears on the product and/or the packaging. Labels do not require Minimum %

If you purchase a product that has one of these marks, it is Category A Evidence and is considered to be both legal and sustainable by the UK Government’s definition. However, if you purchase it from a non-certified supplier, the product’s form or packaging cannot have changed from the time that it left the certified supplier.
