MTCC

The Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) timber certification scheme is a national scheme run by an independent purpose-created body.

The MTCC is an independent non-profit organisation established to plan and operate a voluntary national timber certification scheme to provide assurance to buyers of Malaysian timber products that the products have been sourced from sustainably managed forests. It has a Board of Trustees comprising representatives from academic and research and development institutions, the timber industry, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and government agencies.

In preparation for endorsement of the scheme under the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), the scheme will be modified to involve the national accreditation body (Department of Standards Malaysia, DSM) in the accreditation of certification bodies.

Chain of custody and logo use

There are two systems available for an applicant to comply with the chain-of-custody requirements. One system requires clients to physically separate and segregate certified wood from different origins at all phases of transportation, production, distribution, sale and export. In the other approach, the total batch of products can be labelled as certified when the amount of certified material in the input batch exceeds the set minimum average threshold.

Products labelled as MTCC certified raw material are acceptable as evidence for legality of source.  If you purchase a product that has one of these labels, it is Category A Evidence and is considered to be legal by the UK Government’s definition. However, if you purchase it from a non-certified supplier, the product’s form or packaging cannot have changed from the time that it left the certified supplier. At this time, MTCC labels do not demonstrate sustainability.
