Definition of timber
What the terms 'timber' and 'wood derived products' refer to within the context of UK Government procurement policy
Whilst the word 'timber' is often associated with the raw materials used in construction, in the context of the government's policy, the term also applies to a wide range of goods. Timber includes any product that contains wood or wood fibre, with the exception of 'recycled' materials. In the policy, the terms 'timber' and 'timber and wood derived products' are used interchangeably.
For example, timber used in a building project is not limited to wood planks. Window frames, wall panelling, floor joists or site hoardings are all examples of timber products, and need to meet the UK Government's Timber procurement policy requirements.
Common office products which fall under this policy include paper, presentation folders, notebooks, binders, file dividers, cardboard, office furniture, etc. Some manufacturing processes obscure the wood element, and it may not always be clear whether a product contains wood-derived materials. The CPET Helpline is available for such enquiries.
