Capacity building on forest certification in Africa

Africa’s forests cover more than 20 per cent of the continent, while the Congo Basin contains the world’s second largest area of dense tropical rainforest. These forests are critically important for biodiversity, as carbon sinks, and to provide goods and services for Africa’s forest nations.

Sustainable management of these forests is vital and Proforest has been providing training to forest managers, government officials and NGOs on African forest management certification for many years.

Our first courses in Cameroon brought together leading conservationists and forest managers from all over the region. Subsequent courses have offered auditor training and training on HCV identification and management, standard setting and FLEGT VPA. Our team has contributed to national and regional meetings and workshops on forest governance and certification in Ghana, Gabon, Congo Brazzaville, Congo DRC, Central African Republic, Liberia, South Africa, Cameroon and Madagascar.
