UK Government's Central Point of Expertise on Timber (CPET)

In 2000 the UK Government announced plans for a sustainable procurement policy for timber and timber products as part of its commitment to tackle deforestation and illegal logging. However, it soon became clear that additional support and guidance was needed for the policy to work.

From 2004 until 2012, Proforest ran the UK Government's Central Point of Expertise for Timber Procurement (CPET), offering direct, practical support and training to public sector buyers and their suppliers. The CPET website provided detailed information on the UK Government’s Timber Procurement Policy. CPET furthermore operated a telephone and e-mail helpline that advised individual enquirers on specific products. Finally CPET ran regular training workshops across the UK, and carried out assessments of evidence to determine whether particular sources can be considered as legal and sustainable.

In the last two years, CPET also offered information and support about the EU Timber Regulation and the FLEGT Regulation.
