Technical support to EU FLEGT initiative

The EU Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) action plan aims to combat the trade in illegal timber through bilateral Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPAs) with tropical timber producing countries. These agreements include a Legality Assurance Scheme (LAS), which permits the verification of legality of all timber exported to the EU. This can be a challenging requirement.

With EC, EFI and Partner Countries | 2005 — ongoing

Proforest has been at the forefront of developing FLEGT policies and assessing VPA components. We have developed guidance, provided technical support and training for the EU, partner country governments, NGOs and timber producers in around 15 countries throughout Europe, Africa and Asia.

We have also carried out numerous evaluations and studies including a scoping study looking into options for a VPA agreement with Vietnam, an independent review of the proposed legality assurance scheme of Cameroon, and the development of a Legality Verification System in Guyana.
