REDD+ Social and Environmental Standards

Many national and regional processes for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) are currently under development. However, there is a growing awareness of the need for effective social and environmental safeguards for REDD+ programmes.

Recognizing the growing awareness at both international and national levels of the need for effective social and environmental safeguards, the REDD+ Social & Environmental Standards Initiative (REDD+SES) aims to define and build support for a higher level of social and environmental performance from REDD+ programs.

Proforest has provided technical support to the scheme since its inception, producing an overview of the implementation of international standards schemes, advising on the writing of a technical standard and helping to run stakeholder workshops in Nepal and Ecuador. During 2011 we are providing input to the development of guidelines for use of the standards, and supporting learning and exchange workshops in Ecuador and Brazil, and providing technical input and facilitation support for meetings of the REDD+SES international standards committee.
