Carton producers achieve 100% traceability of wood fibre

Proforest has helped the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE) to ensure their responsible sourcing commitment is met.

The CEOs of the world’s three leading beverage carton producers – Elopak, SIG Combibloc and Tetra Pak – announced last week that they have achieved their commitment to only source wood fibre that is verified to come from legal and acceptable sources. As members of the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE), the organisations have also met their commitment to achieve Chain of Custody (CoC) certification for their entire supply chains of liquid packaging board.

Proforest has supported the ACE members’ progress towards their targets for the past nine years since they signed their voluntary commitment in May 2007.

We have reported on two targets annually as part of our work to monitor and verify the ACE members’ efforts:

  • The percentage of fibre supply that is covered by an independent third-party certificate, demonstrating legality and traceability.
  • The proportion of manufacturing plants that have independent third-party chain of custody certification.

Over time, the ACE members have significantly increased the amount of material they are sourcing which is fully Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. As the figure shows below, the proportion of production plants owned by the three ACE member companies with CoC certification has also increased, from just 6% in 2007 to 100% in 2015. This means that the members reached the ACE target for all their beverage carton manufacturing plants to be certified by 2018 three years ahead of the target.

Proforest’s ninth annual report is available on the ACE website.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the ACE members on their achievement and for their long-term commitment to responsible sourcing in their wood fibre supply chains.
