ProForest Director, Neil Judd, is currently chairing the European process to develop certification and chain of custody process for sustainable biofuels, on behalf of the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN). Sustainability criteria for biofuels have been developed as an element of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED). Earlier in 2009, the EU asked CEN to prepare standards for both chain of custody and certification, to support the practical implementation of the RED. Neil was asked to lead this process, which brings together technical experts from across Europe in regular working group meetings as a part of CEN Technical Committee 383. Draft standards will be released for consultation in November 2009.
