Proforest develops guidance series on the EU Timber Regulation

In March 2013 the requirements of the EU Timber Regulation will come into force. Proforest is developing a series of guidance documents to prepare traders and buyers for its implementation.

The new EU Timber Regulation prohibits placing timber on the EU market if it was illegally harvested. To achieve this, the legislation sets out procedures which those trading timber within the EU must put in place to minimise the risk of illegal timber and products thereof being placed on the market.

In order to contribute to an informed discussion regarding several aspects of the Regulation, Proforest will develop a series of guidance documents for a range of organizations subject to its implementation.

Part 1 of the series is a Briefing Note which describes fundamental mechanisms, roles and responsibilities as laid out in the Regulation and then potential options for meeting the requirements of the Regulation. Subsequent parts of the series will focus on specific aspects of its implementation, such as scenarios of market participants.
