ProForest to coordinate the RTRS Principles and Criteria development process
RTRS General Assembly, Sao Paolo: 8 - 9 May 2007
At the first RTRS General Assembly, it was announced that ProForest has been selected to coordinate the process of developing a set of RTRS Principles, Criteria and Indicators for responsible soy production. ProForest will also lead a simultaneous process to develop a verification system to use alongside the responsible soy standard. This work will involve working closely with a working group of experts in economic, social and environmental from along the soy supply chain, and coordinating periods of public consultations on the draft standards and systems developed by that group.
A nomination period for proposing candidates for membership of the RTRS working group that will develop the principles, and criteria and the verification system is expected to commence in early July. More detail is now available on the RTRS website.
ProForest made a presentation to the General Assembly of lessons learnt in standard setting processes for natural resources, drawing from experience within the forestry and agricultural commodities sector.
The Round Table for Sustainable Soy (RTRS) is a global association of soy producers, processors and traders, as well as financial institutions and non-governmental organizations, created to address the rising demand for environmentally and socially responsible soy production. The RTRS currently has over 50 members, representing more than 20 per cent of the world soy trade.
