Greenpeace: Hardwood species merbau to be extinct in 35 years or less

The tropical hardwood species merbau, or kwila, will be extinct in 35 years or less if action is not taken to stop destructive logging and trade of the species, warns the new Greenpeace report “Merbau’s Last Stand.” The species was once common from Eastern Africa throughout Asia and Oceania but is now found in significant quantities only in the island of New Guinea, in Papua, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea.

A Popular Mechanics special report explains how responsible purchasing can be a useful tool in fighting illegal logging and illegal trade. With reference to EIA investications the report describes how a black market for illegally logged timber is linked to rainforest destruction and organised crime. Several companies and organisations in the report note that consumer awareness can help address the issue.
