High conservation values: an introduction to the HCV concept, as a practical tool for conserving critical values in production landscapes

Oxford, United Kingdom 8 July 2010

course outline

Gabon Forest

The High Conservation Value (HCV) framework is a valuable, flexible conservation tool with practical applications in natural resource management, land-use planning, the design of responsible purchasing and investment policies and conservation advocacy.
This course provides an overview of the HCV concept and its practical use in forest certification. We will consider the history and development of the concept and its
relationship to other conservation approaches, including challenges created by the adoption of HCV in non-forest sector standards such as palm oil and biofuels.

We will introduce the steps needed to identify, manage and monitor HCVs in
forests and other ecosystems, drawing on a number of case studies from differing
contexts, both tropical and temperate. You will be challenged to think about the
implementation of conservation approaches in productive landscapes, and will have
the chance to evaluate real-world examples.

Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will be familiar with the HCV concept and its
implementation in forest certification, and aware of its wider use in a range of natural
resource management settings.
