Responsible forestry and timber trade: linking production to changing market requirements

This course
provides practical guidance for understanding forest management and chain of
custody certification. It explains the major components of forest certification
schemes including an introduction to the auditing process complemented by an overview
of the various independent legality verification initiatives. Participants will
be introduced to step-wise processes for meeting standards and the importance
of traceability and good supply chain management when dealing with certified
and verified legal timber products. Another focus is on the increasing demand
for legality as access requirement to globally significant timber markets. The
course explains the drivers behind, eg EU-FLEGT,
Lacey Act, government purchasing policies, responsible business approaches and
conservation strategies. The course also provides practical guidance on
developing responsible purchasing policies to meet changing market
requirements.
The training course will be delivered through combination of presentation and group work to maximize opportunities for shared learning.
Outcomes
By the end of the course you will have an understanding of the different components which make up forest certification schemes and the different international forest certification schemes that exist. You will understand the issues surrounding responsible purchasing of forest products and will be in a position to develop and deliver a responsible purchasing approach.
