course outline
This course provides practical guidance for understanding forest management and chain of custody certification. It explains the major components of forest certification schemes, including governance, accreditation, certification and standard development. It includes an introduction into the auditing process and highlights the importance of stakeholder engagement and consultation to meeting social and environmental standards. You will also be introduced to step-wise processes for meeting standards and the importance of traceability and supply chain management when dealing with certified products.
You will also gain an understanding of the current scale and the causes of illegal logging on a regional basis. We will provide an overview of the various independent legality verification initiatives. There will be a specific focus on EU - FLEGT, the VPA progress and the new Due Diligence requirements. We will also explain how responsible business through good supply chain management is linked to the regional and international efforts underway to address the problem.
Presented modules are combined with group work and plenary discussion to maximise opportunities for shared learning.
outcomes
By the end of the course you will have an understanding of the different components which make up forest certification schemes and the different international forest certification schemes that exist. You will be able to explain how standards are developed and what a typical audit comprises.
