The Sungai Linau Landscape Conservation and Livelihoods Programme in video

The Programme was initially brought together in 2017 with the common goal of adapting HCV and HCS tools for smallholders, in order to protect the forest while supporting smallholder livelihoods in the village area.

Continuing from the initial phase, phase two of the programme was initiated through a broad collaboration between the public and private sectors where the work is funded partially by UK Aid via the FGMC programme, and by a coalition of companies. The programme has a three-year implementation plan (2021-2023).

Financial contributions from private sectors have been secured from Cargill, IFF, PepsiCo, and Nestle with in-kind contributions from Musim Mas and Asia Pulp & Paper. The on-the-ground implementation is supported by two village facilitators as well as by local Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) such as Yayasan Mitra Insani (YMI), Pusat Pengembangan Sumberdaya Wanita (PPSW) Riau, and Prahu. 

The targeted villages are: Sungai Linau, Bandar Jaya, Tanjung Damai, and Sumber Jaya Villages in Bengkalis District, Riau Province. These four villages are in the area of Giam Siak Kecil – Bukit Batu Biosphere Reserve.

The action plan agreed upon with all the relevant parties comprises four pillars of activities below:

1. Land use planning and management 
2. Conservation Activities 
3. Livelihood and economic activities 
4. Cross-cutting and scale-up activities
