Building on legality

Companies use a variety of mechanisms to implement their commitments to responsible sourcing and production. These include voluntary certification, industry initiatives and company programmes. In many countries, national legislation also addresses many of the same issues. 

This briefing highlights how legal compliance can:

• provide a framework for companies to work with governments to create long-term, large-scale change
• raise standards across the board, potentially reducing the additional costs of certification and responsible production
• strengthen overall natural resource governance.
