Strengthening supplier sustainability capacity in Sabah
Proforest, together Sawit Kinabalu, organised a Supplier Engagement Workshop on 28–29 January 2026 in Tawau, Sabah, Malaysia.
The workshop, attended by over 50 participants, including external mill suppliers and Sawit Kinabalu representatives, shared latest sustainability requirements related to palm oil while fostering collaborative actions to advance responsible practices across the supply chain.
Key updates on topics such as European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), traceability, greenhouse gases (GHG) and climate change, and Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) were shared during the workshop.
Representatives from the government namely Zulmazliza Zulkifli of Sabah Jurisdictional Approach for Sustainable Palm Oil (JASPO) and Yusman Haruna of Malaysia Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) provided updates on state-level initiatives and on the development of Dealer Certification programme. Their session highlighted how coordinated efforts between industry actors, state, and national aspirations can uplift the standards of the Malaysia palm oil supply chain.
Nazlan Mohamad, Sawit Kinabalu Chief Sustainability Officer said during his session that strong collaboration across the supply chain can future‑proof the palm oil industry and ensure long‑term sustainability. He added Sabah contributes 22% of Malaysia’s crude palm oil production, making the sector a key economic driver for the state. Strengthening sustainability, he emphasised, remains a critical priority and this effort is only possible with the active support of suppliers and stakeholders.
