Call for Grounded Engagement - Climate Week NYC
Proforest has joined a group of organisations calling for policymakers, companies and funders to focus on meaningful, grounded engagement that remains focused on impact rather than interest, to Climate Week NYC and beyond. By refocusing the narrative, the group aims to show how ambitious corporate climate targets can also generate positive impacts on the ground.
The open letter calls to ensure that approaches to measure and reduce emissions in Forest Land and Agriculture (FLAG) advance the sector towards regenerative, nature-positive systems. The FLAG sector both contributes to GHG emissions and biodiversity loss and presents a potential solution for nature-based climate solutions, while providing livelihoods and support to communities.
Conservation International, Environmental Defense Fund, IETA, the International Platform for Insetting, Proforest, The Nature Conservancy, Value Change Initiative and World Business Council for Sustainable Development, lay out three principles to inspire meaningful engagement: to drive transformation in the FLAG sector; to ensure a just transition in the context of a changing climate; to maximise impact with efficient use of financial resources.
Climate Week NYC is an important stepping stone on the road to CoP30, where the group calls out the need to better define voluntary standards and policies that incentivise action and engagement beyond individual supply chains. The open letter addresses standard setters and policy makers, downstream companies, upstream and midstream companies as well as financial institutions.
