Landscape Exchange Week Indonesia 2024
Proforest welcomed our global colleagues as well as partners Daemeter and Lingkar Temu Kabupaten Lestari (LTKL) to Pekanbaru, Riau for the Landscape Exchange Week (LEW), which took place from 14-18 October 2024.
LEW aims to expand the Regional Landscape Objectives for the Proforest Global strategy by gathering inputs, not just from our team, but also inputs from our partners.
The week started with discussions on the key components of the landscapes blueprint: multi-stakeholder partnership, action planning, monitoring, and funding strategy. Participants shared knowledge, challenges, and best practices to enhance understanding and uptake of the blueprint.
Proforest was joined by speakers from Unilever, Mondelez, APP, Musim Mas, WWF, APRIL, GIZ, and others, who shared insights on landscape and jurisdictional initiatives. They emphasised reducing carbon footprints, conserving nature, improving livelihoods, and the need for partnerships, long-term investment, and integrating human rights and market access for scalable solutions.
Following the lively discussions, the team took part in a field trip to visit key sites of Siak Pelalawan Landscape Programme (SPLP).
SPLP is an impact-driven initiative by eight upstream & downstream palm oil companies sprouted from companies’ NDPE (No Deforestation, No Expansion on Peat and No Exploitation) commitments to achieve sustainable palm oil production in the two districts of the Riau Province, Indonesia.
The first stop was a palm oil plantation managed by the smallholders of Koperasi Beringin Jaya (KBJ/Beringin Jaya cooperatives). They explained irrigation ditches and canal blockers were built to achieve recommended water levels to optimise yield and keep the peat moist to prevent peat fire and peatland subsidence.
Since its inception in 2019, SPLP aims to achieve four key goals namely to: (1) protect and enhance forest, peatlands, and natural ecosystems, (2) empower palm oil smallholders and surrounding communities to achieve improved livelihoods, (3) respect labour and community rights within the palm oil sector, and (4) pursue sustainable palm oil production goals through improved district policies and plans.
