The engagement between the MY Voice project and the National Union of Plantation Workers (NUPW) continues with an in-person Training-of-Trainers (ToT) session in Kuala Lumpur.

The training, held from 17-19 February 2025, gathered 35 NUPW members from across Peninsular Malaysia. One of the key outcomes of the training was to establish a team of trainers from NUPW to raise awareness and build capacity on topics related to forced labor, child labor, anti-discrimination and effective communication among NUPW members.

The training was led by Tan Jo Hann who has over four decades of experience of community organising and grassroots advocacy since 1980s. The training modules were designed to develop the participants’ critical thinking, leadership, problem solving and issue identification skills. Roleplaying activities were also carried out to simulate the on-the-ground dynamics between companies and members of NUPW.

NUPW members trained during the ToT were also given a Training Primer and Training Manual which contains guidance and tips on how to conduct and facilitate future training at their respective branches.

The MY Voice project seeks to increase worker voice in social compliance systems, increase access to remedy for forced labour and child labour, and help improve communication and coordination between local actors to better identify, remediate, and prevent cases of forced and child labour. The project is led by Social Accountability International and partners such as Proforest, The Centre for Child Rights and Business and Our Journey.

Funding is provided by the United States Department of Labor under cooperative agreement number IL-37321-21-75-K. 100% of the total costs of the project is financed with USG federal funds, for a total of $5,000,000 dollars.
