New market expectations for sustainable natural rubber production
However, large tyre companies and the automotive industry, in general, have become increasingly sensitive to sustainability issues, and several companies are already making significant commitments to responsible sourcing. This is important for many small producers who produce a large proportion of the natural rubber traded on the world market.
Meeting supply chain expectations on responsible sourcing of palm oil is a widely recognised challenge for smallholders. With the emergence of similar expectations in natural rubber supply chains, careful thought needs to be given to systems that ensure sustainability that fits the needs and capacities of smallholders.
