New phase for Tropical Forest Alliance 2020
The TFA 2020 is a global partnership that brings together the Consumer Goods Forum and other key partners, including governments and non-governmental organisations. It aims to halt the deforestation associated with the sourcing of soy, beef, pulp and paper, and palm oil.
TFA 2020 recently launched its first signature initiative – the Africa Palm Oil Initiative.
Starting with six partner countries – Gabon, Ghana, Cameroon, Liberia, Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire – the Palm Oil Initiative aims to decouple deforestation from palm oil supply chains in West and Central Africa. It is hoped that other producer countries in Africa will also engage as the Initiative progresses.
DFID is providing support to Proforest to coordinate the Palm Oil Initiative over the next 18-month phase.
The TFA partners will work at the regional level to develop and agree a set of guiding principles for responsible palm oil production in West and Central Africa. These are anticipated to cover social and environmental aspects as well as deforestation.
Proforest and the TFA partners will also work at the national level with governments and the private sector to define responsible palm oil production in the country context and to develop country action plans to implement minimum good practices in the sector.
