Proforest Africa Initiative commissions a Rural Service Centre for Farmers in Ahafo Region, Ghana

Proforest in collaboration with Forestry Commission and COCOBOD Ghana have inaugurated a new Community Resource Management Area and Rural Service Centre at Dadiesoaba, located in the Asutifi South District of the Ahafo Region, Ghana. The facility is equipped with the resources necessary to provide technical training and farm management services to 15,000 farmers in the surrounding area. This initiative aims to improve sustainable agriculture and natural resources management in the region.

The launch of the Community Resource Management Area and Rural Service Centre is a significant step towards Proforest’s efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and natural resources management in Ghana. This initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of thousands of farmers in the region.

The construction of the Rural Service Centre is part of the implementation of the "Building Deforestation-free Climate Resilient Cocoa Landscape" programme with funding from Walmart Foundation. The project covers approximately 45,880 hectares (about 80%) of the Asutifi-Asunafo Hotspot Intervention Area and directly contributes to 266 hectares of land restoration; 20,000 hectares of land conservation and 30,000 hectares of sustainable management of cocoa.

The Project also has a strong focus on empowering women by establishing a revolving fund to provide financial support and training to at least 300 women in the Dadiesoaba community to diversify their incomes and improve their livelihoods through alternative income streams.

At the commissioning of the Rural Service Centre (RSC), Global and Africa Director, Abraham Baffoe explained how this initiative aligns with Proforest's mission.

We aim to assist farmers in addressing the pressing issues of climate change and the devastating consequences of forest destruction, he stated. Cocoa production is declining, so we have introduced a revolving fund to encourage women to explore diverse income sources. Furthermore, Proforest is actively rehabilitating over 200 hectares of the degraded Abonyere forest.

The Centre is equipped with an input shop, farm machinery, and meeting halls for training farmers ad community members in sustainable agriculture and natural resources management.
