Supporting public consultation on the Accountability Framework Initiative (AFi) in Colombia and Peru
The Accountability Framework initiative (AFi) is led by a coalition of NGOs and sustainability organisations, including Proforest, which aims to accelerate progress and improve accountability on delivering company supply chain commitments in agriculture and forestry. By developing common definitions, norms and implementation guidelines, the AFi aims to align initiatives in order to help companies, suppliers and partners to report clearly on progress – including interim milestones – in order to deliver on their commitments.
The AFi’s core document specifies approaches to a range of key implementation topics. Its first draft was released for a three-month public consultation period in October 2017. In Brazil, Imaflora led in-person and virtual sessions. Whilst in Colombia and Peru, Proforest carried out these processes in coordination with Imaflora and Rainforest Alliance.
In December 2017, a half-day public consultation event took place in Bogotá, Colombia, and in Peru, one-on-one interviews with key stakeholders were held. A wide range of stakeholders engaged with these events – including the private sector, NGOs and certification bodies. Participants reported that they perceived the initiative to be something positive and very much needed to move responsible supply chains commitments forward – although it was also felt that some improvements to the document are still needed.
Another round of public consultation is planned for mid-2018, once version 1 of the core document is released, in addition to regional workshops to promote uptake and application of the Framework later in the year.
