Data Specialist - Sustainability | Latin America Regional Office - Brasília

This is an exciting opportunity for a data specialist to join a global organisation that is working at the forefront of responsible sourcing and production of agricultural commodities around the world.
You will be part of the Proforest Brazil team and will work on data-related activities across client projects, programmes, and technical operations. In addition to an expertise as a data specialist, the ideal candidate will have a keen interest or basic knowledge of agricultural commodity production or broader sustainability issues. Candidates must be Brazilian or have resident status in Brazil.

About Proforest

Proforest is a not-for-profit group with a global presence that works at all levels of supply chains supporting the production and purchase of agricultural commodities that deliver positive outcomes for people, nature and the climate. This covers issues such as the protection and restoration of forests and natural ecosystems, climate, biodiversity, respect for the rights of workers, local communities and indigenous peoples, and the promotion of gender equality.

In 2025 we will complete 25 years of experience working with sustainability in the soy, livestock, sugarcane, palm oil, cocoa, and forestry sectors, among others.

We have a global team of more than 200 highly skilled people from more than 20 countries, working from offices in the UK, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Indonesia, Ghana, Mexico, Colombia and Brazil, where we are expanding and currently have around 25 people. We work collaboratively across regions, exchanging and sharing learning and connecting through in-person and remote events to ensure teams have a strong sense of belonging to a global team.

Position summary

As a Data Specialist, you will have a pivotal role within Proforest Brazil by leading our data strategy development and implementation; being our primary reference not only from the management perspective, but also in terms of analysis, insights and takeaways; being responsible for our technical team’s data development and improvement; and representing Proforest Brazil in internal and external working groups and relevant events.


You will leverage data management into our projects and programmes to improve data quality, performance and security, making the most of data to generate insights and support decision making within our technical team, clients and partners.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead capacity building activities for our data and technical teams.
  • Represent Proforest Brazil in internal working groups and support the data management and alignment improvement process at a global level
  • Engage with stakeholders and represent Proforest in events and initiatives that use data as input for discussions related to People, nature and Climate.
  • Be up to date on emerging innovations and trends to assess and bring to Proforest new and innovative approaches, systems and tools for data management.
  • Be our technical expert and advise our clients on their approach to data management, ensuring best practices and a consistent approach across our project portfolio.
  • Advice and support with our teams to understand clients’ data, decision making, and reporting needs.
  • Apply data skills to generate insights and visualize outcomes in a variety of initiatives linked to our programmes and initiatives as well as to those led by partner organizations.
  • Translating client briefs into data requirements to work with the right set of data.
  • Advise clients on secure mechanisms to store, share and maintain their PowerBI dashboards and associated data.
  • Engage with the global data team to review and improve data management to analytics and visualization workstream.
  • Support the roll-out of the Proforest Data Strategy, leading the implementation of its recommendations and priorities for the region.
  • Work on multiple projects with our clients to deliver meaningful environmental and social positive outcomes in their supply chain and production base.
  • Work on activities involving data management and analysis on a wide range of topics such as traceability and supply chain mapping, environmental and human rights risks assessments, supplier performance, deforestation and conversion-free supply chains, and human rights due diligence.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

We are looking for the following essential skills:

  • Proven work experience as a data specialist.
  • Degree level qualification or above in either data science or similar discipline; or in social and/or environmental issues in agricultural supply chains.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel.
  • Power BI (knowledge of DAX and M is advantageous).
  • GIS (ArcGIS, QGIS).
  • Fluent Portuguese and English speaker.

The following skills are desirable:

  • Smartsheet.
  • Experience with spatial analysis of raster and vector data (GIS).
  • Spatial Databases (knowledge of ESRI Geodatabases and PostGIS).
  • Environmental, social or climate related work/voluntary activities in a forestry or agricultural setting.
  • Work in a project based or consultancy setting, multi-cultural environment, and/or a mission driven organisation.
