Unveiling our new responsible sourcing training course

This autumn, Proforest will run a course sharing our approach to responsible sourcing in Brazil. The training course complements the Responsible Sourcing Practical Guide, which we published in 2015, in order to build capacity in developing and implementing responsible sourcing commitments.

Concern about the social and environmental risks involved in agricultural and forestry commodities production chains has led large companies to establish responsible sourcing commitments.

These commitments aim to ensure that acceptable levels of social and environmental performance have been achieved from the beginning of the chain to the moment of purchasing. This means there is a need to know the origin of products, analyze the risks of each stage of production and set criteria and actions that minimize or prevent risks. The level of engagement of different areas and suppliers of the company is crucial to effective implementation of these actions.

As more companies make commitments, there is an urgent need to provide resources to support their implementation. In 2015, in response to this need, we developed the Responsible Sourcing Practical Guide which distils our experience of helping companies to implement their responsible sourcing commitments into six key elements.

Our new training course builds on the elements of the Guide to further develop capacity. Designed for sustainability and procurement managers, the course will also be useful for anyone involved in responsible sourcing policies for agricultural and forestry commodities, whether from the public or private sector or civil society.
