Transamazonica Connections Landscape Initiative

The result of a partnership between the Solidaridad Foundation, the Institute for Forest and Agricultural Management and Certification (Imaflora) and Proforest, with support from Neste, the Transamazonica Connections programme proposes an alliance to reduce deforestation and promote low-carbon livestock farming in the Transamazon region of the state of Pará, Brazil.

This initiative, set to run until 2027, is developing a model in Novo Repartimento municipality that can be scaled to other municipalities where cattle ranchers are mostly family-based and specialise in producing calves. With a landscape approach, its objectives include, beyond reducing deforestation and GHG emissions, preserving biodiversity, improving the livelihoods of producer families, meeting the requirements of the Forest Code and promoting better agricultural practices.

To achieve these objectives, the initiative is fostering multistakeholder coordination in the region. The municipal coalition was set up to bring together local players: livestock farmers, unions, cooperatives, the mayor's office, secretariats and other public authorities. The goal was to co-create, through participatory workshops, common objectives for Novo Repartimento to move towards sustainable livestock production.

Phase 1 - Design

During the design phase of the programme, consultation workshops were held with local stakeholders to define the regional priority topics to be addressed by the initiative:

  • Implement training programmes
  • Develop financial and non-financial incentives for production and income diversification

As well as two additional recommendations by the Consortium:

  • Promote mandatory individual traceability
  • Encourage the reintegration of blocked cattle suppliers
