Hydration and safer working conditions for sugar cane cutters

In Mexico, Proforest is working with Nestlé and Beta San Miguel (BSM) to support the hydration and safer working conditions of sugar cane cutters. BSM is the largest producer of sugar in Mexico with 11 mills that produce around 1 million tons of sugar per year. The programme aims to ensure access to drinkable water for cane cutters and their families, by installing water purification systems in shelters provided for migrant workers, providing workers with personal water containers to bring fresh water to the field, and delivering training for beneficiaries.

As of 2021, the programme has supported 200 people from three different shelters and provided equipment and training to over 800 cane cutters. This programme illustrates how supply chain companies, mills, and local producer organisations can collaborate effectively to address a key risk.
