Supporting Nestlé to assess compliance on land rights commitments in sugar

As part of our ongoing work with Nestlé on their responsible sourcing of sugar, Proforest recently conducted site visits with a number of sugar suppliers in Nigeria to assess their compliance with Nestlé’s Responsible Sourcing Standard. This included assessing how these suppliers are respecting land rights in their operations. Proforest used the LandAssess tool developed by Landesa to review and investigate how suppliers had acquired their land interests and if local communities were consulted, as well as what procedures and resources they currently have in place to manage land rights and community engagement. This work also involved holding consultation with the surrounding communities to determine how the company’s operations has affected their rights and livelihoods.
