Building practical capacity for human rights and environmental due diligence in Vietnam

On 24 September, Proforest led a human rights and environmental due diligence (HREDD) workshop for Thanh Thanh Cong - Bien Hoa JSC (AgriS) and Bien Hoa Consumer JSC (BHC) - AgriS's key member company in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam, facilitated by Raise Partners.

The workshop brought together colleagues from AgriS and BHC’s Environmental and Sustainable Development, Human Resources and Safety, Health and Environmental team to strengthen the company’s understanding of HREDD and ways to embed due diligence in their operations for responsible sourcing of sugar.

AgriS is a high-tech agricultural enterprise in Vietnam and develops a circular agricultural ecosystem built around the three pillars of AgTech, FoodTech and FinTech. The company develops and operates a circular commercial value chain with more than 200 product lines spanning key agricultural categories, serving the domestic market and are exported to nearly 80 international markets.

Meanwhile, BHC is AgriS’s multinational, multi-category integrated commerce platform. BHC operates full ecosystem of distribution, trading, import-export, processing, and logistics, all powered by data and advanced technology.

The workshop sparked discussions on upstream realities and the challenges of implementing due diligence across agricultural operations and supply chains. Participants also explored the importance of identifying and assessing potential human rights and environmental impacts, taking appropriate action, tracking progress, and communicating outcomes.

The workshop signals AgriS and BHC commitment towards responsible business practices and continuous improvement as aligned with global market requirements. By building internal understanding and supporting cross-functional dialogue, AgriS and BHC can now explore the option of introducing a structured, risk-based approach to HREDD in their operations.

“At AgriS, HREDD is not viewed simply as a compliance requirement, but as an important part of how we strengthen governance, elevate service quality and build resilient, responsible supply chains. This workshop reinforces our commitment to proactively understand our customers’ expectations, translate international standards into practical actions across our operations, and collaborate with global partners to create long-term, sustainable value,” said Bui Thuy Ngan, Customer Service Director of AgriS.
