Decarbonisation of Agricultural and Forestry Supply Chains in Brazil: A Call for Engagement

Decarbonisation of Agricultural and Forestry Supply Chains in Brazil: A Call for Engagement

Brazil is uniquely positioned to lead the decarbonisation of FLAG sector supply chains (forestry, land use and agriculture). These supply chains are technologically advanced, supported by robust data, established sustainable practices, and a genuine capacity to implement emissions reductions at scale. At the same time, big companies are under increasing pressure to reduce their Scope 3 emissions and rely on Brazil as a strategic supplier of agricultural and forestry commodities.

The timing is opportune: global processes to review standards are currently underway, creating a concrete window for the Brazilian context to be incorporated into these methodologies. It is within this context that Proforest, together with a group of partner organisations, launches the Call for Engagement: Decarbonisation as a Driver for Collaboration in Agricultural and Forestry Supply Chains.

The document presents the concept of insetting, decarbonisation within companies’ own supply chains, as a strategic tool that complements offsetting and other established mechanisms, in order to accelerate the transition of Brazil’s FLAG sector towards net zero emissions. Despite the progress of global corporate climate targets and Brazil’s potential, significant barriers remain: insufficient investment to support implementation on the ground, a lack of integrated collaboration among supply chain actors, and the limited regional applicability of global decarbonisation standards.

To address these challenges, the Call invites three groups of stakeholders to engage: the private sector, to foster high-integrity insetting projects and strengthen pre-competitive collaboration across productive landscapes; governments, to integrate the concept into national policies and plans, including NDCs and existing sectoral programmes; and global standard setters, to adapt their standards by incorporating the evidence and needs of producing countries.

We invite all organisations that share this vision to support and amplify this Call to Engagement. Together, we can build a common language that enables Brazil to align corporate and governmental climate targets, mobilise new resources for agricultural decarbonisation, and consolidate its global leadership in the sector.

Organisations wishing to position themselves in alignment with this agenda and contribute to advancing concrete decarbonisation solutions in the sector are invited to support this Call. To express your support, please contact us at insettinginbrazil@proforest.net.
