Strengthening the protection of Sumatran Elephant Corridors in the Bukit Tigapuluh Landscape
On 28 September 2026, Indonesia’s Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, visited the Tebo Elephant Conservation Information Centre (PIKG) in Muara Sekalo Village, Tebo Regency, Jambi, to review progress of efforts in protecting Sumatran Elephants and advancing the sustainable management of the Bukit Tigapuluh Landscape.
The Bukit Tigapuluh Landscape in Jambi and Riau is one of the key areas for Sumatran Elephants to move, forage, access water sources, and reproduce naturally.
The protection of this important habitat connectivity is essential in reducing pressure on elephant populations while minimising the potential for negative interactions between people and wildlife. Hence, conservation efforts are aligned between various stakeholders to ensure the coexistence of wildlife protection, landscape sustainability, and community livelihoods.
During the visit, the PROTECT30 consortium presented to the minister on the programme’s progress and work plan to support habitat protection, connectivity for Sumatran Elephant movement, stronger governance, and the development of sustainable livelihood opportunities for surrounding communities.
PROTECT30 or Promoting Sustainable Landscape Management through Biodiversity Conservation and Forest Positive Action in the Bukit Tigapuluh Landscape, is a joint initiative between APP and the consortium of Proforest, WWF Indonesia and KKI Warsi. It is carried out in collaboration with the Jambi Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA Jambi), the Jambi Provincial Forestry Agency, the Bukit Tigapuluh National Park Authority, and other stakeholders.
As an initial step in implementing PROTECT30, a 17-hectare elephant forage area has been planted with local fruits such as jackfruits, cempedak, terap and semantung. The forage area will help increase food availability and support habitant connectivity for Sumatran elephants.
