How an Insetting Project Works in Practice – A case study

How an Insetting Project Works in Practice – A case study

Proforest, with support from the Climate and Society Institute (iCS), and PUR have published an illustrative case study on insetting projects in Brazil, aimed at companies and producers in the Forests, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) sector. The publication outlines the key stages involved in structuring a mitigation project within the value chain: from understanding the supply chain and identifying Scope 3 emissions, through planning interventions (such as regenerative agriculture practices and agroforestry systems), to establishing robust governance and a strong monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system. Inspired by PUR’s experience in Brazil, the case study illustrates how a multinational agri-food company can structure an insetting project within the cocoa value chain, generating measurable carbon reductions and removals aligned with SBTi FLAG targets.

The case study is not merely a technical exercise; it emerged from a broader sector engagement process that also led to the Call for Engagement launched by Proforest in May 2026. This document positions insetting as a strategic tool for the decarbonisation of Brazilian agricultural and forestry value chains. The Call for Engagement invites the private sector, government and global standard setters to act in a coordinated manner to overcome the barriers that still exist: limited financing for on-the-ground implementation, low levels of collaboration across value chain actors, and the limited regional applicability of international standards. Together, the two publications provide both a practical and strategic perspective on how Brazil can advance this agenda with integrity, scale and lasting impact.

We invite you to explore the case study and learn more about the Call for Engagement (find out more here).
