UK Government steps up action to tackle illegal deforestation
Yesterday the UK Government announced new rules that will ensure everyday products sold in the UK including coffee and cocoa do not contribute to illegal deforestation around the world.
As Proforest we are very pleased to see the UK strengthen its focus on ensuring that forests are protected. The UK has a significant deforestation footprint; it's consumption of commodities such as palm oil, soy, cocoa, and beef is linked to the destruction of roughly 30,000 hectares of tropical forest annually. The many responsible companies we work with are already taking action and support improvements to address these impacts, but this new legal floor can provide a driver for more and better action across supply chains.
With this new regulation coming in place, it is now more important than ever to work on the conditions for compliance and impact on the ground. Proforest's work under the UK’s Forest Governance, Markets and Climate (FGMC) programme is focused on delivering partnerships that can bridge demand-side obligations and local solutions. This means ensuring that regulatory measures translate into real, measurable conservation outcomes across whole jurisdictions and sectors. We look forward to engaging in DEFRA's consultation and working with stakeholders to maximise impacts of demand side policies.
