Sustainable Landscapes in Mexico
Launched in April 2021 by the PepsiCo Foundation and PepsiCo Alimentos México, the Sustainable Landscapes in Mexico programme focuses on plantain, cocoa, and oil palm production in Tabasco and Chiapas. Originally planned as a three-year initiative, it supports regenerative agriculture across PepsiCo’s supply chain footprint in southeastern Mexico.
Context
Spanning more than 10,000 hectares, the programme works with 920 small-scale farmers—nearly half of them women—and indirectly benefits over 37,600 people in rural communities. The region faces challenges such as limited access to technology, low soil fertility, and socioeconomic vulnerability, making regenerative practices critical to restoring ecosystem health and improving livelihoods.
Activities & Proforest's Role
Proforest leads the technical implementation, working with PepsiCo to:
- Engage suppliers and communities, tailoring support to local needs and governance structures.
- Introduce regenerative practices such as drip irrigation, organic composting, and crop diversification on demonstration plots and farms.
- Improve social welfare through better nutrition, drinking water access, health and safety, and sanitation for workers and rural communities.
Objectives
The programme aims to integrate regenerative agriculture into plantain, cocoa, and oil palm systems by improving soil health, increasing yields, empowering women farmers, and aligning with PepsiCo’s global Positive Agriculture vision for sustainable sourcing by 2030.
Results & Achievements
- 920 farmers engaged in regenerative practices across 12,000 ha, with ~50% women beneficiaries.
- 12 demonstration plots, 9 community orchards, and 9 rainwater harvesting systems were established, benefiting 211 communities.
- Adoption of drip irrigation, organic fertilisation, and agro-diversification, enhancing productivity and ecosystem resilience.
Donors, Partners & Funding
The programme is funded and owned by PepsiCo, and implemented by Proforest in collaboration with local producers, government authorities, and community organisations.
