Financing resilient productive landscapes: Proforest consolidates discussions from Brasília meeting

On 18 June, Proforest brought together around 40 participants from more than 15 organisations in Brasília, including landscape initiative implementers, finance experts, companies, financial institutions and civil society organisations, to discuss potential pathways for enabling finance for native forest conservation and restoration, zero deforestation and conversion, regenerative agriculture and livestock intensification in Brazil. The discussions highlighted that no single financial instrument can, on its own, drive the transition towards more resilient landscapes. Instead, different mechanisms need to be combined into tailored ‘baskets’ that reflect the realities of each territory and producer profile.

The material now published by Proforest consolidates these discussions and provides an overview of the main barriers identified by participants, including the long financial return periods associated with nature-based solutions, the continued availability of conventional credit lines without socio-environmental requirements, and the difficulties faced by different producer profiles in accessing finance. For each type of solution, the document also sets out the most frequently cited financing mechanisms and the specific challenges raised during the meeting. It is important to note that this content does not represent Proforest’s institutional position alone, but rather a synthesis of the collective thinking developed by participants during the meeting, complemented by Proforest’s reflections based on the discussions.
