Proforest, organised the first Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Land Rights in Subulussalam City, Aceh Province late September 2025.

The one-day dialogue, supported by Earthworm Foundation and Cipta Rukun Upaya Indonesia (CRU) brought together community representatives, civil society organisations/non-governmental organisations, companies, and local government officials to share their views and explore new opportunities to advance respect and protection of Indigenous Peoples’ and Local Communities’ (IP&LCs) rights of the region.

The deputy mayor of Subulussalam City, Nasir SE, who also attended the dialogue, said in his speech that development is not only about economic growth but also maintaining social harmony and ensuring that people's rights are fulfilled.

The dialogue concluded with an agreement among participants to respect, protect, and fulfil the rights of IP&LCs. A second multistakeholder dialogue is scheduled for end 2025 to continue discussions on the development of collaborative actions to strengthen land conflict resolution and prevention in Subulussalam.

The dialogue is part of a series of on-going discussions anchored under “Supporting Multistakeholder Action on Respecting Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities’ Rights Affected by Agricultural Production in Indonesia,” an initiative implemented by Proforest with CRU Indonesia and Earthworm Foundation.

The initiative is designed to support the Subulussalam City Government’s efforts to strengthen land-conflict resolution and promote respect for land rights. It builds on the work of development partners who that also supported the city government’s development agenda, including the implementation of the Sustainable Palm Oil Regional Action Plan (RAD-KSB) related to plantation governance and conflict resolution.
