Production landscapes

Working together within the landscape

Some of the biggest challenges can’t be solved alone. Landscape or jurisdictional initiatives are fast becoming recognised as a way to address systemic issues, beyond an individual supply chain or sector.

Collaboration between the government, companies and communities, is needed to drive transformational change in deforestation, smallholder livelihoods, respect for Indigenous Peoples and local communities, and labour issues.

Strategic Focus

At Proforest we have a vision of thriving and resilient production landscapes worldwide. This means supporting a balance of activities that have positive impacts for people, nature and climate, through aligned and collaborative action by communities, producers, companies, governments and civil society.

In 2020, our landscape strategy built on early practical pilot landscapes, convened or facilitated by our own teams and by many other organisations across the globe. We facilitated numerous companies to engage with landscape initiatives in their supply bases, along with local government, producers and upstream aggregators. We invested in building capacity for the implementation of landscape initiatives and supported the development and uptake of approaches to measuring their impacts.

In our 2025 – 2030 strategy we continue to drive collaborative action at landscape scale, because we see landscape initiatives as being the only way to tackle challenges and take advantage of opportunities at scale in production landscapes. We aim to clearly define what and how landscapes deliver for people, nature and climate – and how landscape interventions link to policy, regulation and finance flows.

Our goal is to share knowledge, based on our experience, to build on an increasing body of evidence and thinking. Through our work we will catalyse increased coverage of landscape initiatives, from pilots to established long-term programmes, supporting others to lead as well as implementing initiatives ourselves.

Proforest's role in production landscapes

Implementation lead or partner on the ground – to implement and pilot new approaches and thinking. We have experience of global facilitation and implementation, with local context and commodities.

Catalyse financial flows to scale landscape action – through private and public sector. We understand the finance needs and opportunities for different investors to get involved in landscape initiatives, at different stages.

Support companies to invest in landscapes – both directly or through collaborative initiatives, such as CGF FPC. We understand how to operationalise global concepts on the ground, which can help orgs to report on their landscape action to stakeholders and frameworks such as CDP.

Linking supply chains to landscapes – a core part of our theory of change. We work both within and beyond supply chains so can see the need to link supply chain action with landscapes for long term resilience – both for people, nature, climate – and for business.

Share knowledge and build sectoral expertise – we learn from our practical experience and share this through guidance, case studies and landscape reporting, in different regions and commodities. We are part of a growing number of organisations supporting landscape-level action and alignment with local and national stakeholders, as well as investors and supply chain actors. Partnership, collaboration and shared experience are essential.
