Understanding the EUDR: What It Is and Why It Matters

The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is one of the most significant environmental policies introduced in recent years. Its objective is clear: to ensure that products entering the European market are not linked to deforestation or forest degradation anywhere in the world.

The regulation applies to commodities such as coffee, cocoa, palm oil, soy, timber, cattle, and rubber, as well as many of their derived products. To place these on the EU market, companies must demonstrate three key points:

  • The product does not originate from areas deforested after 31 December 2020.

  • Production complies with the laws of the country of origin.

  • A thorough due diligence process has been carried out to trace the origin and assess risks.

What has happened so far?

The EUDR came into force in 2023, but its implementation has evolved over time.
The compliance deadline for large and medium-sized companies has been extended to 30 December 2025, while micro and small enterprises will have until June 2026.
In addition, the EU has proposed certain flexibilities for smallholders and published guidance and tools to support the transition.

These adjustments aim to make implementation more realistic, particularly for exporting countries that require time to adapt.

A turning point for global supply chains

In a context where environmental regulations are tightening and traceability is becoming essential, the EUDR represents a turning point for producers and suppliers of raw materials. Preparing early not only helps to reduce risks, but also creates opportunities to build stronger and more responsible supply chains.

At Proforest, we support companies in their transition towards more responsible practices and in preparing to meet regulatory requirements such as the EUDR.
