Proforest Participates in Rio Nature and Climate Week with a Focus on Insetting and Traceability in Agribusiness

On 3 June 2026, during Rio Nature and Climate Week – the first climate week of the Global South, held in Rio de Janeiro – Proforest took part in the Climate Emergency Brake Forum, making a significant technical contribution to discussions on methane mitigation in Brazilian agriculture and livestock production.

Eduardo Fronza, Proforest’s Senior Project Manager and Climate Specialist, was one of the speakers on Panel 1: Producing More, Emitting Less: Agriculture and Livestock at the Centre of the Solution, an event co-organised by Uma Gota no Oceano and the Global Methane Hub. The panel was moderated by Marcelo Lins from GloboNews and also featured Juan Andrés Cardoso, ecologist at CIAT Colombia, and Guilherme Campbell from the Akorde Institute.

The discussion was based on a strategic premise: mitigating methane emissions in agriculture and livestock production does not mean reducing output, but rather transforming production systems through science, innovation and public policy. Brazil, currently the world’s fifth-largest methane emitter, with agriculture and livestock accounting for approximately 75.8% of national CH₄ emissions, sits at the heart of this climate challenge. The panel explored how this challenge can be transformed into a strategic international advantage for the country.

In his presentation, Eduardo highlighted two key areas of Proforest’s work: the potential of insetting as a tool for sustainable intensification and as a private climate finance mechanism within agricultural supply chains; and the importance of traceability in accelerating the adoption of low-carbon practices across the sector. Both topics are central to the organisation’s work with companies and producers in Brazil, linking corporate mitigation targets to practical action on the ground and creating new capital flows to support responsible production.

The event concluded with a panel featuring Marina Silva, former Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Sonia Guajajara, Minister of Indigenous Peoples, and Ana Toni, Executive Secretary of the COP30 Presidency, reinforcing the importance of the methane agenda as a driver of climate coordination and geopolitical action on the global stage.

Proforest’s participation in the event reaffirms the organisation’s commitment to actively contributing to the debates shaping the climate agenda of Brazilian agribusiness, bringing evidence-based technical perspectives and solutions that integrate production, sustainability and finance.
