On May 22, the Commercial Sub-Council of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT Commercial Sub-Council), successfully organised the Seminar on “Advancing High-Quality Development and Green Supply Chain Development during the 15th Five-Year Plan Period: Sustainable Systems and Implementation Pathways” in Beijing. As co-organiser, Proforest facilitated the multi-party development of an international cooperation platform for green supply chains.

As a regular event of the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS), the seminar focused on key themes for the 15th Five-Year Plan period, including green trade, green supply chains, sustainability standards, certification and accreditation, supply chain traceability and international cooperation. It brought together representatives from the Development Research Center of the State Council, the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation under the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, chambers of commerce, industry associations, research institutions, international organisations, sustainable standard owners, and professional service providers. Participants exchanged views on the institutional framework, implementation approaches and international cooperation mechanisms for green supply chain development.

Participants agreed that as the global green transition accelerates and international trade and economic rules keep evolving, sustainability frameworks are evolving from voluntary initiatives into a fundamental underpinning for corporate risk management, market trust building and international cooperation. Advancing the development of green supply chains is not only a practical necessity for companies to meet compliance requirements and sharpen global competitiveness, but also a key measure to support national high-quality development, boost green trade and strengthen supply chain resilience.

Jian Wan, Deputy Programme Director of Proforest China, introduced the organisation’s core tools, including The Blueprint for Resilient Landscape Initiatives, the ACRES approach, which is the Proforest approach to Agricultural Commodity Responsible Production and Sourcing, and a suite of toolkits developed based on ACRES, which help companies build responsible and resilient supply chains. She also presented the functions and application scenarios of landscape collaboration and other open-access toolkits.

In addition, she facilitated themed discussions covering key traded commodities such as timber, palm oil, rubber, soy and beef. Participants jointly identified key stakeholders and potential cooperation opportunities. These efforts help the industry translate green development requirements into concrete management practices, and offer practical pathways for subsequent industrial pilots, capacity building on sustainability and coordinated development with producing regions.

During the meeting, delegates held in-depth exchanges on evolving international rules for green supply chains, the development of sustainability standards and certification systems, improvement of supply chain traceability capabilities, risk management of key commodities, and cross-institutional collaboration.

All participants agreed that green supply chain development should be elevated from a mere compliance issue to a systematic initiative covering rules, tools, markets and cooperation. While keeping track of updates to global green regulations, it is essential to advance the development of standards, certification, traceability systems and data tools. Diversified participation mechanisms should also be leveraged to deliver sustained incentives and drive tangible progress in green supply chain development.

This seminar has built a cross-industry, cross-institutional and cross-market exchange platform for green supply chain development and international cooperation during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, and explored pragmatic Chinese approaches for the governance of key commodity supply chains.

Going forward, Proforest, together with its partners in China, will continue to act as a bridge and supporting platform. It will further consolidate consensus, pool resources and catalyse actions, and work with all parties to build a more resilient, reliable and high-quality global green supply chain. This will contribute to the growth of green trade and contribute to ‘high-standard opening up’: China’s strategy of aligning with high-standard international economic and trade rules.
