Progress towards a national HCV interpretation for Brazil
More than 30 participants representing a wide variety of organisations gathered in Brasilia on 5 and 6 December to discuss the next steps for the development of a national interpretation for High Conservation Values (HCVs) for Brazil. Proforest facilitated this workshop.

Proforest facilitates first RSPO National Interpretation for small producing countries
In December, Honduras became the first country in the world to develop a National Interpretation of the global Principles and Criteria of the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) using the specially developed procedure for countries producing less than 5% of the world’s palm oil. Proforest designed and managed the National Interpretation process which began in February 2013.

New guidance for the identification of High Conservation Values
Proforest has coordinated the development of a practical user manual for the identification of High Conservation Values (HCVs) which reflects the recently amended global HCV definitions as well as the adoption of the HCV approach by ever more and diverse initiatives.

Sustainable Cattle Programme launched in Brazil
A new programme aimed at developing and testing practical mechanisms and tools for more sustainable production methods of cattle in several regions in Brazil was launched in São Paulo in August. The programme was developed by the Brazilian Roundtable on Sustainable Livestock (GTPS) in partnership with Proforest, and brings together 23 local partners, including producer associations, abattoirs, retailers and NGOs.

Facilitation of UNGC Sustainable Agriculture Business Principles process
The United Nations Global Compact has recently begun a process of developing a set of voluntary Sustainable Agriculture Business Principles. Proforest has facilitated a series of meetings of the Core Advisory Group and has prepared a draft White Paper which identifies a number of issues that may evolve to become Business Principles.

High Conservation Values Workshop in Rio de Janeiro
Proforest, Funbio and the High Conservation Value Resource Network (HCVRN) organized a workshop on High Conservation Values (HCVs) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 25 to 27 June 2013. The workshop brought together people from different sectors and regions to exchange experiences of working with HCVs, identify challenges in working with the HCV concept and find shared solutions.

Draft standard for sustainable algae production to be discussed
Funded by NL Agency, Proforest has worked with the Biomass Technology Group (BTG) to carry out a sustainability assessment of a pilot project for algae production as co-culture in shrimp ponds in Southern Vietnam. Additionally, Proforest developed a draft standard for sustainable algae production which will be discussed at a stakeholder workshop in Utrecht, The Netherlands on 23 May next.
